The project involves an existing structural concrete frame that was designed to accommodate a small semi-detached residence with a basement and two stories above. The completed neighboring residence on the south is a very close representation of the initial design intentions for this project. Since the house lacks sufficient south exposure a ‘block’ of structure is subtracted creating a central courtyard that introduces sufficient daylight and can heat the interior spaces during the winter months. A retractable shade on the roof can shade from the summer sun. Folding and sliding doors along the perimeter of the envelope shade the naturally ventilated interior and exterior spaces and also offer privacy to the residents.
