The interplay between indoors and outdoors within the residence as well as the variable relationship between the house and the neighborhood are themes investigated in this project. A seemingly impenetrable shell can be undone and the occupants personal moments can be confronted by the passersby. A system of sliding perforated metal panels on the street facade, retractable shading devices on the upper floor as well as curtains on the ground floor can determine the relationship with the street but also between the different functions within the house.
The living area, kitchen, and circulation areas, surround the outside courtyard on three sides. This allows visual contact and movement between the different spaces through the courtyard and encourages the integration of open space into the daily life of the occupants. On the upper floor the courtyard is surrounded on three sides by the bedrooms and their circulation corridor.
At the ground floor the kitchen protrudes into the courtyard, creating a communal center surrounded on three sides by yard. The overhang of the bedrooms on the first floor offers shade around the kitchen achieving a more effective relationship between the external and internal spaces. The living room located on the southern road boundary, creates an intermediate space between the public street and the courtyard within the house. The living space can be enclosed and function independently or as a transition space between the outside road and the enclosed yard. A two-storey high entrance courtyard allows southern sunlight into the ground and first floor common spaces and also to the master bedroom.
